Today is the first day of school. My little baby girl is officially a senior in high school.
My heart hurts.
I am also so excited for her, I can hardly sit still.
I was one of the (apparently) rare few who truly enjoyed high school. I loved my classes, my teachers, my friends, even my job.
Yes, there was drama. You can't put more than 1 teenager in a room and not have drama. It's a scientific fact. Look it up. It has something to do with hormones. ;o)
Yesterday was my 5th "day before the first day of school."
They get crazier every year.
The day started around 7am. It started crazy busy. It continued crazy busy all day. New employees. Returning employees. Parents phoning Admin for whatever reason. (Laziness, I think. We're the first listing in the phone book.)
The day had two highlights.
A newly hired playground aide attended the new staff orientation. When she got home, she called me and asked "I need to know when I'm supposed to start work." I asked her "Didn't they give you your schedule?" She replied "No, I know that, I mean what day." I bit my tongue and said "Well, school starts tomorrow." Scary. Scarier still is that she has 2 children who start school today.
Usually I would have mocked her for DAYS. Yeah, not so much. My brain dead moment was on it's way.
Later in the afternoon, I said to MH "Do you want to go out and have a smoke?" (We walk around the block to smoke. WAY off school property.) She nodded. I walked to my desk, took out a cigarette and LIT IT AT MY DESK! She looked at me like I'd lost my mind (I had.) A second later I realized what I'd done and started pinching it out saying "I can't believe I did that!"
I'd like to say that the shock activated my brain and that I spent the rest of the day being awesomely intelligent.
But you're my friends, I can't lie to you.
