What goes around, comes around. Never doubt it.
I came back from lunch today to find a note on my desk. It's the note every payroll person dreads.
"X called. His direct deposit didn't go through and now he has overdrafts on his checking accounts. He wants you to call him right back."
Yeah...lovely. He's a school year employee, so this was his first check of the new year.
I immediately pulled up his paycheck on the computer. Everything looked fine.
So, I called him. To say he was irate, is an understatement. He was so angry, he was sputtering. He demanded that I find his paycheck RIGHT THIS MINUTE and make arrangements for him to be reimbursed for the OD charges RIGHT THIS MINUTE!
As I was speaking to him, I pulled his file. "Did you make any changes to your direct deposit this summer?" I asked. (We have over 600 employees and subs, it's impossible for me to remember who changes what.)
"NO!" he roared. (Yes, he really did roar.)
By this time I had his file in my hand. I frantically flipped through it to find his direct deposit information.
He is set up for direct deposit. INTO HIS SAVINGS ACCOUNT.
Trying not to laugh, I told him "It looks like your direct deposit is for your savings account, not your checking account."
"No it isn't." He replied. "When did I do that?"
"Um....January 2008." I answered, still trying not to laugh.
Apparently over the summer he'd forgotten that for the past 18 months, he'd had his paychecks deposited into his savings account.
I told him he was welcome to come in and change it to his checking deposit. "It will only take a minute or two and then you'll be set."
He mumbled something and hung up. And no, he did not apologize. I giggled about it for the rest of the day.
Because I'm evil like that.
